MPs visit New Tyne Tunnel
The APPGI arranged for Members of Parliament, Julie Elliot MP, Kevan Jones MP and local elected representatives visited the New Tyne Crossing Project today to see the project in its final stages of completion.
The new tunnel, being constructed by TT2, is scheduled to open in February.
The existing Tyne Tunnel will then be refurbished before it is reopened in December next year.
Traffic levels are in the region of 38 thousand vehicles per day which means the road network in the surrounding area becomes very congested. Consequently the £260 million New Tyne Crossing Project was introduced.
This will enable the capacity of the crossing to more than double due to the construction of a second vehicle tunnel, a new toll plaza and a major redevelopment of the Southern Interchange.
